Have Questions?
We know some folks will still have some questions, so here are the most Frequently Asked Questions regarding the RCN “Analog Crush®” initiative in the Lehigh Valley.
1. What is “Analog Crush®?”
Analog Crush® is our term for making the complete conversion from analog to digital, which will give you the best possible picture. This also enables RCN to add more channels, especially those in HD, and more choices in cable packages.
2. How much is this going to cost me?
There is no charge for the new, expanded programming, but if you need more than one standard digital converter (“box”) there will be a low monthly charge for each set-top box you require. If you already have an HD converter or HD/DVR converter, there will be no additional charges.
3. How much will additional set-top boxes cost?
The first standard set-top box is free and each additional standard set-top box is $2.95 per month.
4. How many more channels will I get after the Analog Crush® is done?
When Analog Crush<® is complete, you will be able to choose more cable packages, more premium channels, and a larger selection of International channels, and the most HD channels and overall video content in the Lehigh Valley area – up to 400 all-digital channels overall.
5. How many HD channels will be added?
RCN will offer over 100 HD channels.* (100 HD not available in all areas)

7. Will customers need any additional equipment to get HD programming?
Yes – RCN provides the first digital converter free, but to receive HD programming, you will need to upgrade to an HD converter or HD/ DVR set-top box and you must have an HD-capable TV.
8. What is the cost of an additional HD box?
It’s $9.95/mo. for an HD converter; $14.95/mo. for an HD/DVR converter.
9. How will the converter box(es) be distributed?
You can contact RCN to schedule an appointment for free installation An RCN technician will install as many boxes as needed to pre-existing, wired RCN TV customers.
10. What is the charge for RCN to install the boxes?
There will be no charge to install the new cable boxes to any current customer with an active, wired RCN cable hookup.
11. How long will the Analog Crush® take?
Our goal is to complete Analog Crush®> in the Lehigh Valley before the end of the year.
12. Will everybody in the Lehigh Valley receive same programming and HD channels?
Unfortunately, there will be small number of folks – approximately 5,000 homes -- that need to have the external wiring technology upgraded before they can access all of RCN’s programming. However, even these customers will still benefit from Analog Crush®> by receiving over 90 HD channels and an improvement in overall quality.
13. Can I come to your office to pick up a cable box?
Unfortunately, no: An RCN technician still must come to your home to install the new equipment and modify the pre-existing wall connections.
14. If I already have converter boxes on all my TV’s, do I need to do anything?
Nope. You are all set and ready to go once the Analog Crush® initiative is complete.
15. What happens if my TVs aren't hooked up to converter boxes?
Once the Analog Crush® is complete, you won't be able to watch RCN cable. Without a digital converter, your TV won't read our all-digital channels.
16. What's the difference between regular digital channels and HD channels?
Regular digital channels are broadcast in Standard Definition, better in quality than analog TV, free of snow, ghosts and static. Our HD channels come to you in High Definition, with an even sharper picture and CD-quality Surround Sound.
17. Will Analog Crush® automatically make my channels HD?
No. It will simply make all your channels digital. To watch in HD, you need either an HD converter or an HD/DVR converter.
18. How is this different then DTV?
DTV was a government-mandated project to enable consumers who received their television broadcast by an antenna to receive a converter that will allow them to receive the new digital broadcasts once the over-air, analog spectrum was eliminated for television. RCN Analog Crush® is not related to this project in any way; it is simply how we’re making it possible for Lehigh Valley customers to receive hundreds of more channels and more HD broadcasts in just one simple step.
19. Are other cable companies doing this?
Yes, however, RCN was among the first to bring this type of expanded choice to its customers.
