SPRING PLAYOFF ACTION ’25

May 1, 2025 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

Before we continue with our coverage of spring sports teams’ news featuring the schools in the Astound TV Network viewing area, we have some programming information.

Coming up on the next ATVN SportsTalk,  our guests will be Executive Charter High School’s CEO Bob Lysek, New Head Football Coach Kyle Haas and members of the Raptors football team.

Executive made major news last week with the announcement of a brand new football stadium to be built on Allentown’s East Side, and the school has more plans for its athletics program going forward.

Kyle, meanwhile, is an established coach in the area and has a track record of success, so it should make for an interesting show to hear his plans for his new program.

Be sure to tune in!

Now, we salute the champions, runners-up and state qualifiers of our local cheering / spirit championships, with the finals conducted at Easton Area High School.

  • Small 3A Division:
    • Champion:  Easton (SQ)
    • Runner-Up:  Northampton (SQ)

LV Notebook 2025 Vol. 2

As part of this week’s look at the local high school baseball scene, ATVN baseball broadcaster Ben Childs went to one of the best games of the regular season to date, with Nazareth pulling off an extra-innings victory over Freedom.

He caught up with Nazareth Manager Brian Wolf, starting pitcher Landon Glovis (who threw six shutout innings and had a couple key hits) and winning pitcher (and the player with the game-winning walk-off hit) Bobby Gzrenda

Astound TV Network Sports: Ben Childs’ Nazareth Baseball Interviews (4/25)

In other local baseball notes…

  • Easton’s Zach Mattes kept the Liberty hitters off-balanced as the Red Rovers pulled off a huge victory over the Hurricanes on a day both teams honored the memory of late Liberty Assistant Coach and Marine Veteran Mark Benetsky.  Easton has not yet clinched a spot in either the league or district playoffs but is playing teams directly ahead of them in the standings coming up this week and still can get in.
  • Whitehall’s Jack Lloyd also pitched a gem as the Zephyrs posted an impressive win over Parkland, greatly helping their chances of reaching the EPC playoffs (their victory over North Schuylkill the very next time wasn’t too shabby either!).  The defending District XI champs have already clinched a district playoff berth and are currently #1 in the 5A classification with a little more than a week left in the regular season.
  • Despite the loss to Nazareth, Freedom continues to have an impressive season as they have clinched a district berth and remain in the “top 4” spots in the race for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.  Among the team’s highlights this spring include senior Chase Walker’s 100th strikeout and the hot hitting by sophomore Santiago Rodriquez, hitting over 400 with 10 extra base hits and 20 RBIs as of last weekend.
  • Much like last spring, Salisbury is catching fire just as the playoffs approach.  They’ve scored several impressive wins recently and are not only now in the top four spots of the Colonial League playoff race, but enter this week just one game back of Allentown Central Catholic in the race for the Class 3A district playoff top seed (they too have already made the district postseason).

Check back to “The Shop” for more videos, interviews and local baseball notes throughout the spring baseball season.  Also, be sure to watch for ATVN’s baseball post-season coverage for both the league and district playoff games coming up on May 8th on the Astound TV Network and live-streaming for free on our YouTube channel!

Classic Video Showplace: In Memorium…ATVN’s Paul Lewis

April 21, 2025 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

If you have watched our broadcasts on Astound TV for any length of time, you have probably heard me say, on more than one occasion, that I am privileged to work with some of the hardest working, dedicated and loyal colleagues that I have ever been around in my 30+ years of working in the communications industry.

It’s a statement that I don’t say flippantly … and something I mean with all my heart.

But of all the people that I have ever worked with, there is no one who truly loved his work more than ATVN’s own Senior Editor, Paul Lewis.

After a two-and-a-half month bout with an illness, we lost Paul last Wednesday.

He was 59.

I first met Paul when I was a “Guest Auctioneer” when the local PBS station would host their extremely popular “Great On-Air Auctions” each spring — one of the great television events in this region that surprisingly stopped some time ago.

The event brought in on-air “talent” from all over the area – from established broadcasters to local “celebrities” – many not having a ton of announcing experience.

Like many of the people who worked at WLVT back then, Paul was extremely cordial and welcoming to all of us there to participate and showed a great deal of patience working with all of us (when I first started I was primarily a “radio guy” back then and was not familiar with all of television’s “tricks of the trade”).  Despite working with so many “newbies,” Paul in particular was always friendly and helpful and made for a fun experience – Not to mention while still putting out a quality production from his spot behind the scenes.

Fast forward a number of years and Paul became a welcomed addition to our studio at Astound.  Whatever his original title was when he was brought on board, he quickly embraced the nickname of being our station’s “Cookie Rojas” (named after the legendary baseball player who was a master at whatever skills a team required him to do).  Paul was always quick to help out with whatever was needed and never said “no” when any of us asked for his assistance or to pick his brain about his very extensive knowledge of graphic design, editing, video production or pretty much anything you’d want to know about working behind the scenes in television.

If he was given an assignment that was immediately “due yesterday,” Paul would literally stay at his editing bay all night to make sure a project was completed.  We also had to be careful not to bring up things that had to be done near a weekend or before a scheduled day off, because it was not uncommon for him to come in outside of business hours – just so he could be sure a task that needed to be done was finished.  We often kidded Paul if he had decided which “room” at the studio he would be taking his vacations in.

Paul also freelanced working on independent films and documentaries, but his true passion away from the studio was his tuba.  He loved performing in parades, concerts or anywhere there was a musical gathering (one of his favorite groups was being a part of the “Hobo Band,” which, despite their purposefully raggedy appearance, was a great little band to listen to.)

In fact, the last two times I visited Paul in the hospital, while he was going through quite a great deal medically-speaking, I could always get a smile out of him when I suggested he request his tuba be brought in to form an impromptu band so he could entertain the other patients.

Of the multitude of responsibilities Paul had with ATVN, something he handled with class and sovereignty was the production of our “Memorial Video” for our annual Dream Come True telethon.  He took a great deal of pride putting the video together every year and strived to honor all the people associated with this organization who had passed on during the previous year.

Sadly, we’re now left to try to live up to Paul’s lofty standards in trying to pay tribute to his memory, for this year’s event.

We’ll miss you Paul.  There is truly no way to replace you on our staff…and in our hearts!

Paul’s immediate family members wanted me to pass along that they are trying to secure a date with Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem for a memorial service for him. Two dates that they are looking at right now are either Saturday May 17th or Sunday June 1st.

LV Baseball Notebook 2025 Vol. 1

April 17, 2025 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

As part of our first look at the local high school baseball scene, we introduce new ATVN baseball broadcaster Ben Childs’ interviews with local baseball players and managers.

For his first interview of the spring Ben went to the Colonial League and caught up with Notre Dame-Green Pond Head Coach Mike Bedics and a few of his players after the Crusaders victory over its arch-rivals, the Wilson Warriors….

LV Baseball Notebook 25-1: Ben Childs w/Notre Dame-Green Pond

 In other local baseball notes…

  • After a rocky 2024 season and despite a hard-luck loss in extra innings to Parkland on Monday night, Central Catholic is back with one of its best campaigns in recent years.  The Vikings entered this week in first place in the District XI 3A standings and have the depth to make a long playoff run
  • In addition to the “usual” powerhouses (i.e., Liberty, Parkland and Nazareth), Freedom is off to a great start, winning 7 of its last 8 games and Northampton has pulled off several impressive wins so far this spring
  • Despite a coaching change at Saucon Valley, the Panthers have been one of the top 4A schools in the region, directly behind Tamaqua, Lehighton and Northwestern in the standings and AHEAD of last year’s defending champions, Bethlehem Catholic

Tune in to next week’s ATVN SportsTalk show for more local baseball features.

Check back to “The Shop” for more videos, interviews and local baseball notes throughout the spring baseball season.  Also, be sure to watch for ATVN’s baseball post-season coverage for both the league and district playoff games!
